Russia Aircraft Industry Lands in Syria
Ilyushin Finance Co., a Russian leasing company, negotiated the supply of a dozen of Il-96 and Tu-204 jets to Syrian Arab Airlines in 2007-2008 at the ILA-2006 International Air Show in Berlin. Ilyushin Finance views the contract with Syrianair as a chance to enter the Middle Eastern aircraft market.
The official Russian delegation headed by the Federal Industry Agency’s chief Boris Aleshin arrived in Berlin on a Tu-204-300 on Monday. “We wanted to show a Tu-204 not only to our European customers but, more importantly, to potential buyers from developing countries,” a source of Kommersant in Ilyushin Co. said.
Syrianair’s delegation and the airline’s chairman of the board, Nachaat Numir went to see the Tu-204 on Tuesday. The source in Ilyushin Finance reported that the Syrian airline was of a high opinion of the plane, and the leasing deal is to be struck in June.
Ilyushin Finance and Syrianair have been in talks since last year. The parties are negotiating the supply of three Il-96-400 long-haul planes and from three to six Tu-204 medium-range jets of different modifications. All the planes were built at Aviastar-SP in Ulyanovsk. The jets are to be delivered between 2007and 2008. Each Il-96-400 costs $60 million and each Tu-204 costs over 30 million.
The Syrian contract is not the first export deal of Ilyushin Finance. The company leased two Il-96-300s to Cubana in December and March. In April, the parties signed a contract on the supply of another five aircrafts – two Il-96-300s, two Tu-204-100s and one Tu-204 cargo plane.
