Abashidze Deprived of Immunity
Prosecutor General’s Office of Georgia has resolved to initiate a criminal case against Aslan Abashidze, former president of Adzharia, and added him to the wanted list.
Abashidze fled from Batumi in May 2004, in the wake of the multi-thousand rallies calling for his ouster. At that time, Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili guaranteed the immunity to Abashidze and his family, should he stop political activities and leave the country with no bloodshed.
Abashidze is in Russia now and has no intention to return to Batumi, the more so that a criminal case was brought in against him yesterday. Former president of Adzharia has been charged with terrorism, office abuse and appropriation of the state-run property. The terror charges stem from his order to blow up the Choloki bridge, as a result of which the transport route between Adzharia and other parts of Georgia was broken.
Moreover, Abashidze is said to have long opposed transferring the taxes from Adzharia to the central budget of Georgia. He is also accused of corruption and his property that is still in Georgia will be put up for sale in part and in whole.
In Georgia, they say Abashidze has breached the terms, whereby he was granted immunity. He has never stopped provocative political activities in Moscow, always endeavoring to return to the political scene of Georgia.
Abashidze was granted immunity so that he could leave Adzharia and save himself, specified Georgian President Saakashvili. The state cannot guarantee immunity to a man, through whose fault children blow up on mines, Saakashvili said.
