CSKA Moscow Wins UEFA Cup
For the first time in the history of Russia and the former Soviet Union, a Russian Club – Gazaev’s CSKA Moscow won the UEFA Cup in a final soccer match against Portuguese Sporting.
Sporting appeared to have gained complete control over the match at first at its Jose Alvalade stadium, the more so that the Russians were under the pressure of the superb shot of Rogerio. But the situation has totally changed after the break. Having briefed by Gazaev, CSKA emerged a completely different team with Daniel Carvalho as a real star, having a hand in all three goals. Alexey Berezutsky headed in Carvalho's free-kick, Yuri Zhirkov slipped in the second, with Vagner Love ramming in a third to wrap up a remarkable win, BBC said on its web-site. The final score was 3:1, CSKA’s victory.
