Russian Businesses Trust Quality and Qualification
A survey of medium-size Russian businesses conducted by the Grant Thornton International as part of their annual business overview shows that 73 percent of businessmen surveyed in Russia consider high-quality goods and services the best form of completion, and 71 percent say highly-qualified employees. Those are higher indicators than the world average. Only 19 percent mentioned innovation (despite its popularity in the Russian economy), large-scale economizing or international marketing connections, compared to 31 percent worldwide.
On the regional level, tools for competition differ significantly between Moscow and other cities. In Nizhny Novgorod and St. Petersburg, more than 70 percent of entrepreneurs consider qualified employees the priority factor in competition. The quality of goods produced is directly related to the qualifications of the personnel. The labor market in the regions is rather small and undeveloped, so the human factor has substantial weight there. In Moscow, qualified employees are rated second (66%) to quality goods and services.
Among the more significant sources of competitive advantage, respondents in the regions list ethical standards in business relations. International market connections are of more interest in Moscow (28%). That factor goes almost unnoted in the regions (6%). Thirty percent of businessmen in Perm and Nizhny Novgorod are prepared for large-scale economizing, but only 24 percent in Moscow. Grant Thornton considers the lack of interest in the international market and in saving money signs of shortsightedness in Russia business.
