Safina Takes Los Angeles Title
Russia’s Dinara Safina crashed Italy’s Flavia Pennetta during the Women’s singles final in the East West Bank Classic in Los Angeles July 27, 2008. Rafael Nadal of Spain predictably won the men’s Masters in Toronto and could be officially declared word No. 1 next week.
Continuing this season’s march, Dinara Safina crashed Flavia Pennetta 6-4 6-2 to triumph in the East West Bank Classic in Los Angeles. Although gradually, Safina is getting her fans accustomed to her frequent appearance at the WTA finals. Indeed, she has played four finals of the last five tournaments with Los Angeles event taken into account.

For Safina, the excellent season started by Berlin’s victory, the powerfully Russian advanced to Roland Garros and Hertogenbosch finals. Wimbledon was an exception, where Safina was seen off at the early stage.

Younger sister of once world number one Marat Safin, Dinara had a single tough match in Los Angeles. It was the standoff vs. Alla Kudryavtseva, where the girls endured three sets, and two of them were decided at tie-breaks. Dinara played world No. 2 Yelena Jankovic in the next effort. For the latter, the loss meant the failure to end the WTA reign of compatriot Ana Ivanovic.

As to Safina, having done with the extremely-motivated Serb, she had no difficulties in the match vs. Flavia Pennetta.

In the men’s Masters, Rafael Nadal predictably overwhelmed Nicolas Kiefer 6-3 6-2 in Toronto to win the 30th title in career and the 7th one this season and to near the ATR No. 1 Roger Federer.
