Moscow Mayor Saves Money for Crimea
Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov urged yesterday to break the current Russia’s-Ukrainian Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation, as the Ukrainian authorities are forcing the Russian language out of their country. In another effort, Luzhkov ordered to appropriate over $34 million under the target program on supporting the compatriots abroad in 2009 through 2011.
Notorious for heated rhetoric, Yuri Luzhkov lashed out at Ukraine at the yesterday’s sitting of the Moscow government dedicated to the target program on supporting the compatriots abroad in 2009 through 2011. The mayor called on Russia’s leadership not to extend the Treaty on Friendship and Cooperation with Ukraine that was inked in 1998 and expires this year.

“I feel an intellectual shock when I see what is happening in Ukraine in respect of Russia and the Russian language,” Luzhkov explained. According to the mayor, a teacher of Russian earns less than other teachers and Ukraine broadcasts no TV programs in Russian without the captions.

“It is the policy of Ukrainian authorities to force out the Russian language when the whole left bank and Crimea think and speak Russian,” Luzhkov vowed. Having pointed out that the aspect of Russian-Ukrainian relations should be particularly specified in the target program of Moscow, the mayor ordered to improve the support of our compatriots that remained in Ukraine and Crimea.

Ukraine called Luzhkov persona non-grata after the mayor challenged the state belonging of Sevastopol-city of Crimea. The statement clouded the relations of Moscow and Kiev. Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko decided against prolongating the agreement on the RF Black Sea Fleet stationing in Crimea after 2017. The RF State Duma passed June 4 a resolution spelling out potential denunciation of the Treaty on Friendship with Cooperation with Ukraine, while Russia’s President Dmitry Medvedev warned Yushchenko that the gas price would probably double in 2009.
