30th Moscow International Film Festival Begins
A high-spirited Will Smith walked down the red carpet at the opening of the 30th Moscow International Film Festival, signing autographs and even hamming it up with the musicians. Festival president, film director Nikita Mikhailkov joined him in the merriment and guided him gently back to the Pushkin Theater.
The ceremony itself began with the tradition greeting from the Russian president. Historical footage was shown of the award of the 1959 Grand Prize to the late Sergey Bondarchuk for the film Man’s Fate. The prize was kept at the Mosfilm studio and was given to his widow Irina Skobtseva and son Fedor Bondarchuk at the ceremony.
After handing the Bondarchuk the award, Mikhalkov presented the festival jury. It is headed by Liv Ullmann, and he placed with the traditional chain with an image of Georgy the Victory Bringer around her neck. On the ritual clapperboard, used by Will Smith and Charlize Theron to begin the festival, the number “30” was written in Arabic numerals, instead of Latin, because “XXX” has undesirable associations. Japanese director Takeshi Kitano is also a guest at the festival. He was awarded the Golden Georgy prize for his contributions to the development of cinematography.
