Bad Day for Cars and Girls
A court in Lyon, France, has refused to reconsider the legality of the arrest of three young Russian women taken into custody in the resort town of Courchevel in the French Alps in January of last year. At that time, Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov and at least 16 women were held on suspicion of involvement in a prostitution ring. No charges were filed against them. Several of the women have been pursuing cases against the French police since that time. The claimants identified as Anastasia F., Marina G. and Irina S., filed suit in a court in Chambery to find the actions of the police in Courchevel illegal. Their lawyer, Soren Margulis, promised to appeal that decision.
In an unrelated case, the rash of car burnings that has been seized Moscow for several days has spread to Perm. On the night of June 4, five automobiles in that city were set afire in the Industrial and Sverdlovsk neighborhoods of the city. Four of those cars were Russian-made. On the night of June 2, a Toyota RAV4 and a Jeep Grand Cherokee were set ablaze an hour apart in the Motovilikhinsky neighborhood. Police say the same people are likely to be behind all the arsons. A parking lot attendant was assaulted in the incident in the Industrial neighborhood.
