Kuznetsova Goes Through
Svetlana Kuznetsova advanced to the quarterfinals of the French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros in Paris. The Russian predictably saw off Victoria Azarenka of Belarus to play Estonia's Kaia Kanepi en route to the possible triumph. Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic will clash for another place in the semifinal.
Kuznetsova is impeccable at this Roland Garros, yielding only 19 games and no set to opponents during four matches, although there were really tough players amid them, for instance, Russia’s Nadia Petrova and Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.
For Svetlana, it is the third quarterfinal at Roland Garros in a row. Her best result was in 2006, when she played Justine Henin in the final. The chance was slim that time. A clay winner, Justine triumphed at four of the last five French Open tournaments.
Kuznetsova next faces Kaia Kanepi, the first Estonian who progressed to the quarterfinals at the Grand Slam tournaments. If Svetlana prevails, her opponent will be the winner of all-Russian quarterfinal played by Dinara Safina and Elena Dementieva.
There were no surprising victories in the men’s section yesterday. Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic won their quarterfinals in straight sets to book a meeting in Roland Garros for the second consecutive year. For this purpose, third seed Djokovic defeated Latvian Ernests Gulbis, and defending champion Nadal eased past compatriot Nicolas Almagro.
