Davydenko Progressed Into Round 3
Russian Nikolay Davydenko saw off fellow Russian Marat Safin during the second round of the French Open tennis tournament at Roland Garros, in Paris on May 29, 2008. Top seeds Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer also progressed to the next round. Russia’s Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina triumphed in the lady’s section.
When speaking of the forthcoming match with fourth-seed Davydenko on Wednesday, Safin said the chances would be more or less equal if he played his best tennis and Davydenko played his worst one. At the beginning, it appeared that Safin’s hopes were materializing and Marat was truly in-form in the first set. Pressuring at the start, Safin broke first to lead 3-0, but Davydenko finally recovered. He staked at keeping the ball in game as long as possible and leveled the score.

Safin didn’t yield that time, brilliantly winning two balls at the score of 5-4 to get a triple set ball. But today’s Safin is far from stable. He lost on tie-break the first set and was just a shadow of himself in the remaining ones. Davydenko won 7-6 (7/4), 6-2, 6-2 and it was his fourth victory over Safin in a row.

Top seeds Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal advanced to the third round of the French Open, while David Nalbandian and James Blake suffered shock defeats.

In the lady’s section, French star Amelie Mauresmo was crashed by Grand Slam debutant Carla Suarez-Navarro of Spain. Russia’s sixth seed Anna Chakvetadze yielded to Estonian Kaia Kanepi. Third seed Jelena Jankovic, fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova and eighth seed Venus Williams are in the next round, as well as Russia’s Elena Dementieva and Dinara Safina.
