Moscow Witnessed a Long Circuit
A big fire broke out Saturday at Chagino power sub-station of Moscow that is to replace the facilities that burnt in 2005 triggering the energy collapse in Russia’s capital. No blackout happened this time, but the fire ruined a transformer worth 80 million rubles and a part of the premises. The builders blame the emergency on defects of transformer of Ukrainian make.
The fire at Chagino new power sub-station in southeastern Moscow was reported to emergency officers at 5:20 p.m. It broke out during the adjustment of step-down transformer of 220/110 kV. Dozens of fire fighters failed to put out the burning oil and two emergency helicopters were summoned to the place of the accident to spill water in turn.

The fire was localized by 8:30 p.m. and finally extinguished at 9:14 p.m. Neither the Chagino employees nor the firemen suffered in it, but it ruined a roof and protection wall of sub-station’s new building in addition to the transformer. Exactly that wall coupled with the efforts of the firemen saved three similar transformers of the substation.

Unlike the accident of 2005, the blackout didn’t threaten Moscow and the Moscow region this time, as the facilities hadn’t been launched for power supplies to consumers yet, said Olga Kindyashova, who is the official representative of Federal Grid Company of Unified Energy Systems (FSK UES).

A special commission was set up yesterday to probe into the reasons of accident. Its members are the people of FSK UES, Energo Engineering Center that is the general contractor for sub-station’s construction and Ukrainian Zaporozhtransformator, which supplied the equipment.
