Medvedev’s Inauguration Lured Record Number in Moscow
The inauguration of Russia’s new President Dmitry Medvedev attracted the record number of TV viewers with two government channels recording the aggregate audience share of above 55 percent in Moscow, which is notably above the number of Russians, who watched Putin’s inauguration in 2004.
According to preliminary data, over 40 percent of TV viewers in Moscow that are over 18 years old, i.e. nearly a half of all potential TV audience, watched Medvedev’s inauguration on Pervy Channel in live air May 7. The rating of 8.4 percent (the ratio of TV viewers to all population) was unusually high for the day air.
The interest of Muscovites was target-oriented. The morning Fashion Verdict TV program at Pervy Channel posted the attendance of just 19 percent, the following special release of news program attracted 22.9 percent, but the crowd grew to 41 percent by the start of inauguration. The rating nearly doubled as well. The number of TV viewers of Pervy suffered the dramatic drop once the inauguration was over.
Nowadays, a rare TV project can boast of such lion share of the audience. The Victory Parade of May 9 or the New Year congratulations of the president are in the same league.
Of interest is that Rossia Channel that also broadcast the inauguration wasn’t favored by the viewers. There, the broadcasting share was over 2.5 fold less than on Pervy – just 16 percent with the rating of 3.3 percent. Nevertheless, the aggregate indicator of two government channels that reflect the extent of Moscow interest towards president’s inauguration reached the record 57 percent.
The number climbs to 60 percent if the moderate 3.1 percent of TV Center that also broadcast the inauguration is taken into account. Pervy showed again the inauguration at 11:49 p.m. that day to attract as much as 20.2 percent in Moscow.
Only 31 percent of Pervy viewers and 14.6 percent of Rossia audience watched Putin’s inauguration May 7, 2004.
