Virgin Fought Its Way to Russia’s Air
Owned by Britain’s billionaire Sir Richard Branson, Virgin Group (VG) is entering the market of Russia. The launch of its multiservice operator will be announced in Moscow this week.
Virgin Group’s arrival in Russia was reported by a few market players. One of them said the company will create here a multiservice operator of federal significance that will use the WiMAX technology. VG will develop this business based on Trivon operator and under the Virgin brand. Virgin owns a sizeable stake in Trivon, the source specified.

According to another source, Trivon has set up the WiMAX netwoks in 30 cities of Russia, and its license covers Moscow, St. Petersburg and adjacent Belgorod and Voronezh regions. The project start-up will be announced May 15. People in Trivon declined to comment, Virgin didn’t comment either.

Trivon was created in 2004 to render WiMAX/access to virtual private nets/IP-telephony services to companies of small and middle business in Eastern Europe, Russia, CIS, Middle East and Far East. According to Spark-Interfax, OOO Trivon Networks is a part of Trivon. Rostislav Gromov, former general director of RTComm.RU and general director of Orion Express satellite broadcasting operator, took charge of Trivon Networks in April. Gromov declined to comment on the company’s links with VG yesterday.
