Georgia Seeks West's Support against Russia
Georgia’s diplomatic activities in the West have borne their first fruits. The administration of U.S. President George W. Bush has condemned the increase in the Russian peacekeeping contingent in Abkhazia, calling it “provocative.” So far, that is all the support Georgia has drummed up in its latest showdown with Moscow. Georgian officials have visited European and American capitals in search of support for their country. Speaker of the parliament Nino Burjanadze went to Washington, where she met with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
"These steps have significantly and unnecessarily heightened tensions in the region," official White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said. She said that Russia was risking a military confrontation and called on it to respect Georgia’s sovereignty. “We have once again received assurance that the U.S. supports Georgian territorial integrity and it will do everything necessary for Georgia to provide Georgia maximum protection from any unfriendly actions,” Burjanadze summed up on her return.

Georgia is also eager for the European Union and OSCE to condemn Russia’s actions, in addition to its old ally the United States. Georgian State Ministers for Reintegration and European Integration Temur Yakobashvili and Georgy Baramidze flew to Vienna and Brussels for that purpose. Yakobashvili will take part in a meeting of the OSCE permanent council today. “My visit to Vienna is connected with possible actions of the OSCE in relation to Georgia and in relation to the conflicts that exist today,” he stated. Baramidze addressed the European Parliament and told it about Russia’s “aggressive actions” against his country. Yesterday, the parliament of Latvia adopted a declaration in support of Georgia.
