MVZ Widens the Bar
Inter-Republic Winery Trading House (MVZ) has a solid chance to emerge as the first whisky maker in Russia. Based on the advice of KPMG, MVZ will choose between whisky distillery in Scotland or a bourbon maker in the United States by this year-end. The whisky consumption in Russia doubled past year, the analysts specify when explaining investor’s interest in this product.
The new project of company provides for the acquisition of a bourbon maker in the United States or a whisky distillery in Scotland, as “they are more popular than the enterprises in Ireland,” said MVZ Trading House General Director Evgeny Kalabin. MVZ is in talks with potential consultant, KPMG, and “if we agree, KPMG will consult on buying the companies in Britain or the United States,” Kalabin specified.
The company that MVZ will finally choose is to have an established distributor net in Europe, which will promote the foreign sales of MVZ product. The holding acquired the Flagman vodka brand and Bastion cognac brand in 2007 and became the owner of Jansen Cognac House in France in 2006.
The whisky interest of MVZ is easy to understand – the consumption of expensive imported alcohol is nearing the consumption of expensive vodka in Russia, said Vadim Drobiz, who heads the Center for Federal and Regional Alcohol Market Studies. According to the Center, some 27 million liters of vodka priced above 300 rubles per a 0.5l bottle were bought in Russia past year, while the consumption of other premium alcohol – cognac, whisky and rum – totaled 18 million liters, including the whisky consumption of 7 million liters. The last indicator is projected to step up 20 percent this year.
