Social Nets Lure Bloggers
The number of active bloggers in Runet lost a portion in the recent half-year and the blogsphere growth was half as much, says the report of Yandex. One of the reasons is the booming popularity of social nets, for instance, Odnoklassniki.ru. Regardless, the decline hasn’t affected the ad revenues of blog services, which are estimated at $34 million to $36 million for 2008.
The growth in the Russian-language blogshere has slowed down materially, signals the report elaborated by Yandex. The number of blogs in Runet went up by 23 percent to 3.8 million online journals from November 2007 to April 2008 vs. the acceleration of 74 percent from November 2006 to April 2007 and 55 percent in the following half-year. The growth rates of biggest blog services, including LiveJournal, LiveInternet and LovePlanet have evidently lost momentum if compared with past year’s November.

The number of active bloggers shed first time from September 2006. A third of bloggers used to add some notes to their journals at least once in three months in November 2007 and only a fifth of them do it now. In big blog hostings, Damochka.ru and Rambler Platena (over 150,000 journals each), the share of active bloggers equals 3 percent and 8 percent respectively.

Nowadays, quite a few users favor not blogs but social nets for writing and communicating, said Mikhail Ushakov, PR director at Yandex. “Social nets are booming in today’s Russia, while the blogs had the same two years ago. The audience of Runet most popular social net, Odnoklassniki.ru, goes up 40 percent a month,” said MindShare Interaction Senior Manager Yulia Udovenko.

Odnoklassniki.ru has 15 million registered users and Vkontakte.ru has around 11 million, Udovenko specified, adding that the social nets earned no more than $1.5 million past year, while Odnoklassniki.ru alone will generate more than $10 million from advertising this year. The blogsphere advertising yielded roughly $20 million in 2007, according to Finam, and 2008 revenues will be from $34 million to $36 million.
