ChronoPay Suffers DDoS Attack
The Russian segment of the international ChronoPay Internet bank card payment processing system is being subjected to a massive DDoS attack. The attack began on March 30 and is still continuing, according to ZAO ChronoPay general director Pavel Vrublevsky. The server for ZAO ChronoPay is located in the United States. The attack has the power of 600 Mbyte/sec. and has caused a 10-hour service outage. A similar attack three years ago caused the company losses of $700,000.
The company has filed a statement with the Russian Interior Ministry's special technical unit citing Criminal Code of the Russian Federation articles 272 (“Unauthorized access to computer information,” punishable by up to five years' imprisonment) and 273 (“Creating, using or distributing hostile computer programs,” punishable by up to seven years' imprisonment).
ZAO ChronoPay is a subsidiary of the Dutch ChronoPay B.V., founded in 2003. It is the largest processor of bank card payments on the Russian Internet. ChronoPay B.V. processed electronic payments of $250 million last year. The company belongs to a group of private individuals, including Vrublevsky. He suspects its competitors of launching the attack, noting that the company has received no blackmail demands. A DDoS attack can spoil a processor's image before its clients. The market for electronic airline ticket payments is now being staked out in Russia. Analysts say that market will be worth $4-5 billion by 2010.
