Svetlana Kuznetsova Beat Venus Williams to Face Serena
Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova crushed Venus Williams in the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open tennis tournament in Key Biscayne, Fla. Tuesday, April 1, 2008. Kuznetsova next plays Venus’ sister Serena.
Svetlana Kuznetsova crushed Venus Williams of USA in two sets in the quarterfinals of the Sony Ericsson Open on Tuesday. She next plays Venus’ sister Serena, who defeated world number one Justine Henin of Belgium.

Similar to the past year’s final, Serena Williams again saw off the winner, this time it was world number one Justine Henin.

Apart from Svetlana’s progress, another Russia’s achievements at the tournament is the thrilling victory of Dinara Safina over Lindsay Davenport of USA in the last 16. The American saw off world number 2 Ana Ivanovic on Sunday but Safina proved too tough for her and won in the two-set battle (6-3 6-4).

This victory of Dinara is especially pleasing in view that she will probably soon play Davenport in the Fed Cup semifinal that Moscow hosts April 26 and 27.

Russia’s Vera Zvonareva and Elena Dementieva also made the quarterfinals.

In the men’s section, Russia’s Igor Andreev defeated Guillermo Canas 6-4 7-6 (8-6) to play Tomas Berdych, who ended the Sony Ericsson hopes of Dmitry Tursunov 6-2 6-2.
