Kuznetsova Made the Quarter-Finals in Miami
Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova reached the quarter-finals at the Sony Ericsson Open tennis tournament in Key Biscayne, Florida. Having escaped a match-point vs. Victoria Azarenka of Belarus, Kuznetsova crashed Shahar Peer in the next effort.
Kuznetsova’s match against Victoria Azarenka in the third round was a thrilling battle. Svetlana was a shadow of herself in the first set, winning just 19 balls of 49 and yielding to Azarenka 1-6. Victoria continued in the same spirit in the second set to lead 5-2 over the Russian. But Svetlana escaped a match point, won that set and then prevailed in the decider with the stunning score of 6-0. “I thought it was the end,” Kuznetsova said later on. “But she missed and it picked me up.”
In the next effort at Sony Ericsson, Kuznetsova beat Shahar Peer 7-6 (7-4) 6-3. She next plays Venus Williams, who easily overwhelmed Dane Caroline Wozniacki en route to the historic sister-to-sister semi-final with Serena.
The good news for Russia is the victory of Dinara Safina vs. Lindsay Davenport in the last 16. Another Russian, Elena Dementieva defeated Sabine Lasicki 6-3 6-2 to progress to the match vs. Jelena Jankovic. But top seed Justine Henin saw off Elena Vesnina 6-2 6-2 in the fourth round to play Serena Williams.
