Caviar to Be Marked Genetically
The actions dividing the catch of wild and farmed sturgeon along with the caviar will soon be added to the bill introducing the state monopoly on sturgeon, said representatives of the State Fishery Committee (Goskomrybolovstvo). Today’s concern of Goskomrybolovstvo is to win the consent of Iran, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan for imposing the five-year moratorium on the catch of wild sturgeon.
Russia has dropped the export of black caviar already. And the state monopoly advocated by Goskomrybolovstvo chief Andrei Krainy means that only the caviar of artificially-reared sturgeon will be available on the market and Russia will be exporting the caviar of farmed sturgeon exclusively. This caviar will be marked genetically, people in Goskomrybolovstvo promised.

In Goskomrybolovstvo, they explained that the state monopoly on sturgeon was actually the preparation for banning export of Russia’s sturgeon and its product. The purpose to attain is to divide the markets of wild and farmed sturgeon along with the caviar. Andrei Krainy declared the start of the second stage yesterday.

The official suggested imposing the five-year moratorium on the sturgeon catch in the Caspian Sea for all Caspian nations and even for the purposes of research. This potential ban will be the subject of international bargaining, people in Goskomrybolovstvo specified.

The global quota for black caviar production in the Caspian Sea equals 1,000 tons. Past year, Russia legally produced 200 tons of caviar (the better part of it goes for research). Besides, it produces from 30 tons to 40 tons under the quota of Turkmenistan. Russia has no industrial quota of SITES and pursuant to the bill of 2006, the sturgeon catch is allowed only for the purposes of breeding and research here.
