Russia’s Business to Build Collapsible Churches
Russia’s orthodox businessmen suggest building collapsible light churches in Moscow outskirts and in other cities and towns of Russia, expecting them to turn into “the moderate-size outposts of Orthodoxy.” Moscow Patriarchate has approved the project already.
The leaders of Russia’s Orthodox Maecenas Club presented yesterday The Seven Churches in One Day project. “Nowadays, there are no churches in quite a few bedroom communities. If the Khrushchevkas [5-storey dwelling houses built in Khrushchev time] tackled the problem of housing demand, we intend to sort out the problem of church shortage,” said Vladimir Mikov, deputy head of the club.
According to the Orthodox business, a church should be available per each thousand of Orthodox believers. The project provides for building the required number, which was actually the practice of Tsar Russia. For this purpose, the business will elaborate a special technology enabling to construct a church in 24 hours.
“Our churches are made of timber impregnated with special solution preventing from decay and fire,” Mikov said. The expenses will be for the account of community members. “Should the believers decide to construct a stone cathedral afterwards, this church could be easily moved to another place, a kilometer away, for instance, and there will be two churches in the district,” the official said assuring that the project is purely charitable and will yield no profits to arrangers.
The first light church is scheduled to be built April 6 in Kemerovo, then they will emerge in Moscow, Kiev and Minsk.
