Russia’s Ice Dancers Won Bronze in Gothenburg
Russia’s Jana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitsky won Saturday the bronze medals in ice dancing at the World Figure Skating Championships in Gothenburg. Trained by Alexei Urmanov, Sergei Voronov was the fourth in the free dance.
In the absence of Europe’s champions Oksana Domnina/Maxim Shabalin, bronze winners, Yana Khokhlova and Sergei Novitsky were the leaders of our team in Gothenburg. And the couple performed up to the expectations. They were even the second after the original dance but failed to contain the agitation when opening the performance of dancing stars on Saturday and weren’t accurate enough. As a result, the gold went to French Isabelle Delobel/Olivier Schoenfelder and dazzling Tessa Virtue/Scott Moir of Canada finished the second after winning the three dance.
Sergei Voronov, 20, was only the 15th after the failure in the short program. But that low place apparently discouraged neither Sergei nor his trainer, 1994 Olympic Champion Alexei Urmanov. Voronov was perfect on Saturday and won the fourth place in the free dance. As a result, the Russian climbed from the 15th to the 7th place and booked the second seat for the country in the men’s section of the next World Figure Skating Championships in Los Angeles.
In the men’s section in Gothenburg, the competition was exciting until the very last performance. Canada’s Jeffrey Buttle won the gold medal for his country first time since 1997. Brian Joubert of France advanced from the sixth place after the short program to get the silver and Johnny Weir of the United States won the bronze.
