Berezovsky Charged With False Denunciation
The Investigating Committee of the RF Prosecutor General Office brought yesterday another criminal action against political émigré Boris Berezovsky. This time, Berezovsky is accused of intentionally false denunciation, may face a new absentee trial and imprisonment of up to six years. Last year, Berezovsky was condemned to six years in prison for involvement in embezzlement of Aeroflot money.
According to investigators, the ground for launching a new criminal case against Berezovsky was his statement that reached the Scotland Yard in 2003, before Britain granted the political asylum status to him. Five years ago, Berezovsky informed Britain’s police that the agents of Russia’s secret services had arrived in London to attempt to kill him.
That address was the intentionally false denunciation, Investigating Committee briefer Vladimir Markin said yesterday, specifying that Berezovsky received the political asylum status exactly thanks to that application.
In the Investigating Committee, they said they are preparing another extradition request for Berezovsky. The new case is the fourth criminal action initiated against the businessman in the recent years. Berezovsky had been already accused of plotting a coup d’état, fraud with AvtoVAZ securities and embezzlement of Aeroflot funds of 214.9 million rubles.
Of all cases, only the one related to Aeroflot reached the court. Past November, Savelovsky Court of Moscow sentenced Berezovsky in absentia. The exiled businessman was condemned to imprisonment of six years and committed to pay damages.
