Atomenergoprom, Toshiba Aimed at Strategic Partnership, Global Leadership
Russia’s Atomenergoprom and Japan’s Toshiba have inked an agreement on cooperation in the nuclear power engineering, viewing it as the first step towards strategic partnership. Kazatomprom may become the third member of the alliance.
Under the new agreement, Atomenergoprom and Toshiba will set to elaborating cooperation programs covering the design and engineering of nuclear power plant facilities, production and maintenance of large-size equipment as well as production and services related to the nuclear fuel cycle.
The ties between the parties may lead to strategic partnership, Atomenergoprom said in the statement. A source close to the holding specified that the matter at stake is creating a world leader on the global market of nuclear technology that will construct nuclear power plants, manufacture big-size equipment and win shares on the market of products and services of the nuclear fuel cycle.
Nowadays, Atomenergoprom is the fourth on the global market of nuclear power engineering. The leading trio comprises Toshiba-Westinghouse alliance (Toshiba owns 67 percent), Areva-Siemens alliance and General Electric-Hitachi alliance. But the market realizes that the first place will go to the company that enters into a contract with Russia, a source said, pointing out that the partnership with Toshiba won’t discontinue current projects of Atomenergoprom.
