Cyprus to Yield No Files under Khodorkovsky Case
Cyprus prosecutors refused yesterday to meet the request on international legal assistance under Mikhail Khodorkovsky-Platon Lebedev case that was submitted more than three years ago by then Russia’s Prosecutor General Vladimir Ustinov.
Vladimir Ustinov addressed his Cyprus counterparts in December of 2004, seeking their help in obtaining through local courts the financial files of two Yukos offshores - Dunsley Ltd and Nassaubridge Management Ltd. According to Russia’s investigators, exactly those firms used to launder billions of dollars generated from selling crude oil that they had stolen from Yukos subsidiaries.
Exactly in December of 2004, the senior investigator of prosecutors, Salavat Karimov, opened the second criminal case against two ex-holders of Yukos, Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev. Under that case, the businessmen were charged with the theft of over 349 million tons of oil and laundering over 487 billion rubles and $7.5 million via foreign offshores. Nowadays, Khodorkovsky and Lebedev are studying exactly the files of that case in China.
Of interest is that, after the Cyrus prosecutors recalled their request from the court, the prosecutors of Russia said they didn’t need the files any longer, as they had obtained the required documents “from other sources.”
