Transport Ministry and Lufthansa Settle
The Russian Transportation Ministry and Lufthansa have reached an agreement on the German airline's cargo flights after negotiations in Munich that began last Thursday. The negotiations were described as unproblematic. The ministry has extended Lufthansa Cargo's permission to fly to Southeast Asia through Astana to the end of the summer season. In exchange, Lufthansa has agreed to transfer its refueling point from Astana to Krasnoyarsk within five months after the official publication of the Krasnoyarsk airport's certification in the ICAO second category, which the airport promises do to before the end of the year.
New negotiations will be held in Krasnoyarsk in September of this year. Lufthansa came into conflict with Russian aviation authorities last autumn, when the Transportation Ministry refused to renew the airline's temporary permit to fly over Russian territory after October 27, saying the German airline had agreed to make a stopover in Russia on its Trans-Siberian flights.
The agreement reached in Munich is practically identical to earlier agreements on the airline's return to Russia. Analysts say the agreement is a model for future agreements with the European Union. Monetary questions remain open, however.
