Russia’s MPs Too Cautious for Breakaway Republics
The State Duma focused yesterday on the sovereignty addresses of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Transdniestria. The hearing was staged as the response of Russia’s parliament to unilateral declaration of Kosovo independence.
It was the Duma Committee for CIS and Ties with Compatriots that promoted the yesterday’s hearing. The committee’s chief Alexei Ostrovsky spared no efforts for advertising the action dedicated to the conflict settlement in CIS and independence addresses of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Transdniestria, which was widely regarded “as our response to Kosovo.”

Transdniestria’s Supreme Council Speaker Evgeny Shevchuk, his Abkhaz counterpart Nugzar Ashuba and South Ossetia’s Vice Speaker Yuri Dzitstsoity played key parts in the performance, giving the interviews to all TV channels available.

But the general agitation notwithstanding, the MPs were very prudent when reacting to the independence strive of Abkhazia, South Ossetia and Transdniestria. The recommendation of the State Duma was to change the format of relations with those republics “with regard to the unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo and its recognition by a number of states.”
