Putin Won't Replace Marx
The Moscow City Duma Commission on Monumental Art has turned down the idea of erecting a monument to Russian President Vladimir Putin, delaying the question for a future time. Chairman of the commission Lev Lavrenov proposed rejecting the idea because “in civilized countries, the significance of public and state figures is determined 50 years after they leave office.”
“Let's leave the question for future generations,” Lavrenov said. Moscow resident Semen Perfilyev proposed raising a monument to Putin “in connection with his 55th birthday and as a state present for his distinguished historical accomplishments.” One of the designs Perfilyev proposed was a sculpture of Putin on a marble arch over a silver sphere. “The sphere is the northern hemisphere,” Perfilyev explained to the commission. “Made of silver, 20-25 meters wide. With Russia and other countries depicted on it.” Perfilyev proposed making the sculpture of the president of bronze, “his figure in a slightly spread trench coat with a scroll in his hand. That is the Putin Plan.”
The proposed site for the presidential monument is Theater Square “in place of the monument to Karl Marx, since Marx is a non-Russian historical figure.”
