Russians Admitted U.S. Visa Fraud
Former U.N. translator Vyacheslav Manokhin of Russia and his partner Vladimir Derevyanko, who is the New Jersey resident now, have pleaded guilty and admitted making fake documents for the entry visas to the United States, the U.S. authorities announced Monday. Both Russians face the sentence of up to ten years in prison.
The verdict will be delivered when the Federal Court sits in New York June 26. The Russians face the sentence of five to ten years in prison.
U.N. translator Vyacheslav Manokhin and New Jersey resident Vladimir Derevyanko were arrested on the fraud charges far back in August of 2007. Benefiting from his office position in the U.N., Manokhin was forging invitations to the U.S. conferences, which generally suffice for getting entry visas to the United States.
But the conferences weren’t held or the persons invited didn’t attend them.
The clients of partners were mostly the natives of former USSR living in France or Uzbekistan. As a result, some 14 managed to illegally arrive in the United States under the fabricated documents. One of them is Uzbekistan’s resident Kamildjan Tursunov, who paid $15,000 for the fabricated invitation. Tursunov was also arrested past August.
During the trial, the RF Foreign Ministry always emphasized that Manokhin worked in the U.N. under the contract. He has never been the diplomat of Russia and has been never employed with the RF Foreign Ministry.
