John McCain Campaigns Against Russia
From time to time, the topic of Russia re-emerges during the presidential race in the United States. The republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain issued the tough statement on the outcome of the Russian election.
"In an election that was uncontested, where opposition candidates were either suppressed or arrested, where the result was foreordained by the manipulations of a corrupt and undemocratic regime, the one thing that was never in doubt was the result. It is a tragedy of history that at this moment, when the democratic tide has reached more nations than ever before, the Russian people be again deprived of the opportunity to choose their leaders in a free and open contest," McCain said in the statement.

During the news conference in Phoenix, Arizona, John McCain called the Russian election ``clearly rigged'' and reiterated that Russia shouldn’t be included in the next Group of Eight meetings, as the members of that organization believe in free and open economies, free and fair elections.

``It is obviously an election that did not pass the smell test … These elections were clearly rigged,” the senator said about March 2 presidential election in Russia.

The Bush administration doesn’t comment on the statements made by participants of the presidential race in the United States.
