The Zamoskvoretsky Court in Moscow began the reading of the sentence in the criminal case against for minister of atomic energy Evgeny Adamov and two of his former subordinates, general director of the Tekhnabexport company Revmir Fraishtut and director of the Troitsky Institute of Innovative and Thermonuclear Research Vyacheslav Pismenny. The resolution will be read toady. It is already clear that the defendants will be found guilty of embezzlement and abuse of office.
The main accusations are related to stock in the Globe Nuclear Services and Supply company, which was formed in Switzerland in 1991 under and agreement between the Russian and U.S. governments to provide low-enriched uranium to power American generators. Adamov is accused of transferring the controlling package in that company to the private American company TEXI. Thus, according to the prosecution, “Russia lost control over the Swiss company. (The Russian Federation owned 49 percent in it.) In addition, Adamov transferred $113 million in debt from the Swiss company to Tekhsnabexport and the Russian government lost $18 million in income from uranium deliveries.
Adamov and his associates maintain their innocence and did not comment. The prosecution is asking that Adamov, 68, be sentenced to ten years' imprisonment. The possibility that Adamov will receive a suspended sentence “does not suit the prosecution,” prosecutor Viktor Antipov added.
