Press Conference Not a Record Setter
Preliminary data on the viewership of Russian President Vladimir Putin's press conference on February 14 were released yesterday by TNS Gallup Media. The annual live broadcast was scheduled in advance and even advertised on Channel One. While the press conference did not go unnoticed, but did not as large an audience as in some previous years.
According to the data, the press conference received 23.5-percent share in Moscow and a 4.3-percent rating on Channel One. On the Rossiya channel, the broadcast's share neared 26 percent and its rating was 4.8 percent. The channel's overall share that day was 17.3 percent. Only the program Moscow News ranked above the press conference that day, with a 26.6-percent share, and its rating was lower, at 3.8 percent.
In the rest of the country, a third of those sitting in front of their TVs were watching the press conference on Channel One, while Rossiya attracted only 17.8 percent. That figure was nonetheless larger than any other program in the time slot.
Last year, Channel One's broadcast of the presidential press conference received a 44.1-percent share in Moscow and 37.5 percent nationwide. That press conference was the most watched of all seven that Putin gave. (There was no press conference in 2005.) The second most popular press conference was that of 2004.
