Less to See in Red Square for a While
The Lenin Mausoleum was closed yesterday for mummy maintenance. In addition, new restrictions have been imposed on photographing and filming on Red Square and in other places adjacent to the Kremlin, such as Alexandrovsky Park. From now on, professional photography and filming will require a permit from the Kremlin. Also limitations will be places on the size of the equipment used.
The first restrictions on photographing and filming on Red Square were made in 1993. A spokesman for the Federal Guard Service explained that the new rules are aimed at limiting advertising activity. “It's a disgrace when someone dressed as a hamburger walks around the heart of the country and they photograph him against the background of the Kremlin,” he commented. “Not so long ago, there was a case where ten people in customs that looked like cellular telephones tried to enter the Kremlin.”
Photographers who violate the rules will be forced by the police to destroy their photographs or footage. Professional photographers note, however, that modern equipment easily conforms to the new size standards.
The Lenin Mausoleum is being closed for regularly scheduled maintenance. The last time it was closed was from November 10, 2006, to January 9, 2007. The mummy's “anatomical form” will be the center of attention this time, and it will be dressed in a fresh suit to “preserve it s external appearance.” Experts say that the body of Vladimir Lenin can be preserved another 100 years using current technology.
