Ailing YUKOS Exec Will Remain in Custody
Judge Olga Nedelina of the Simonovsky Court in Moscow has ruled that former YUKOS vice president Vasily Aleksanyan, who is suffering from AIDS and cancer, will continue to undergo treatment in the holding facility where he is currently located. “No change in holding measures is required for a full course of treatment,” Nedelina declared, adding that Aleksanyan might “put pressure on the investigation or hide” if released. This trial will be delayed “until the end of the treatment he is undergoing.” The judge did not explicitly state where Aleksanyan's treatment will take place, however.
Aleksanyan's lawyer, Elena Lvova commented that “It is unclear what the judge wants to say… There is no special hematology clinic in the holding facility.” She said that the decision would be appealed unless Aleksanyan was transferred to a hospital. She noted that it was not possible to cure the defendant and that it may take months for him to reach remission. Aleksanyan's brother Garnik Aleskanyan called the decision “completely ungrounded cruelty.”

Prosecutor Nikolay Vlasov commented cautiously after the hearing, saying that Aleksanyan's treatment was “within the competency of doctors, not jurisprudence,” and, in reference to the possibility of his fleeing, “I am not a medic, I cannot evaluate his condition.”
