Most Popular Sites with Russians Listed
The Polish market research company Gemius has published the results of its measurements of the Russian Internet audience. It is the first study to look at both Russian and international websites, through “user-centric” programs installed in users' computers. This is in contrast with “site-centric” research done by TNS Gallup Media, which installs counters on sites that can identify visitors' origins, which is expected to be made public next month and include only data from sites in Moscow.
Gemius' results were gathered last December from 1200 users over the age of 18 from a variety of Russian cities. Yandex was found to be the most popular site, with 15.8 users per month. Russian-language Google was in fifth pace, and Google in English was in sixth place, fr a combined audience of almost 10.4 million people per month. RBK, receiving its first independent audience estimate, was used by 5.6 million people. The only surprising finding was the low rank of Live Journal. That service, which is extremely popular in Moscow, ranked only 35th nationally.

Experts note that the survey was based exclusively on home users, and therefore was top-heavy with entertainment sites. They say that advertisers will be more interested in the TNS findings because they will include business users as well, since advertisers are more apt to do business with informational sites. KOMKON also performed a survey of Internet use based on SpyLog statistics. KOMKON representative Natalia Tkacheva told Kommersant that that company's findings will be released this week as well.
