Povetkin to Box in World Championship
Russian heavyweight boxer Alexander Povetkin is now an official contender for the International Boxing Federation world championship after beating American Eddie Chambers on points at the Tempodrom in Berlin on Saturday. Lennox Lewis provided commentary on the match for the American HBO television network. The 28-year-old Povetkin called the match the toughest in his career, which he began in 2004 after winning an Olympic gold medal. That is a meteoric rise in the sport.
Povetkin won over Larry Donald and Chris Byrd last year, and said that he had never faced a hard battle. Chambers landed more blows than Povetkin, but weakened as the match continued. All three judges gave Povetkin the victory with scores of 117:109, 117:111 and 116:112.
Povetkin's next match depends on the outcome of the fight between Ukrainian IBF world champion Wladimir Klitschko and Russian World Boxing Organization Sultan Ibragimov on February 23 in New York. Povetkin said that it would be an honor to fight wither of them and that he will begin working to eliminate weaknesses he uncovered in himself in the ring with Chambers.
