Sharapova Enters Final at Aussie Open
Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova easily defeated Serb Jelena Jankovic in a match lasting an hour and 18 minutes with 20 unforced errors. She has now entered the final for the Australian Open for the second year in a row. Jankovic has been complaining of strong back pain. Sharapova will face Ana Ivanovic, also from Serbia, tomorrow. Ivanovic just defeated Slovak Daniela Hantuchova after a very weak start in that match.
Hantuchova complained, ineffectively, to the judges during her match against Ivanovic of the unpleasant sounds Ivanovic made scraping her feet on the court. Ivanovic called the act “gamesmanship” later. She will now be able to match her foot-scraping against Sharapova's infamous yelling. If Sharapova wins against Ivanovic on Saturday, she will lack only the prize from Roland Garros to make up a complete collection from the Grand Slam.
The men's Open has been marked in recent years by unexpected finalists. In 2006, it was Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, and in 2007 Chilean Fernando Gonzalez. This year, it is unseeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who defeated Spaniard Rafael Nadal in three sets. Tsongas will face the winner of today's Roger Federer – Novak Djokovic match.
