Storing Counterfeit Money Criminalized
The Russian State Duma approved on the whole the first reading of a draft law to increase the severity of article 186 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Production and Distribution of Falsified Money and Securities”). The authors of the bill, MPs from Samara, propose to make storing and transporting counterfeit money as serious as making and passing it. That is expected to close a major loophole in enforcement of the law. The new law was introduced a year ago, but only came up for discussion yesterday.
The government response to the bill, which is to be taken into consideration before its second reading, stated that the law must make it clear that it applies only to the storage and transport false money or securities intended to be passed off as real.

The legal community has had a mixed reaction to the bill, noting both the need for it and the possibility of abusing it.
