United Russia Consolidates Gains
In an effort to consolidate gains at the recent parliamentary elections, the Congress of United Russia passed yesterday a few resolutions related to the party’s organization and personnel. United Russia is apparently willing to toughen control over law-making and ideology and be able to attract only the best of the nation as members.
One of today’s aims of United Russia is to strengthen the link of the party with the State Duma. In his report, Boris Gryzlov particularly emphasized the need “to near the work of State Duma factions and the Supreme Council Bureau” and urged regional branches to immediately inform people about the actions of faction, emerging actually as its regional offices.
In the State Duma, the progress in the party’s work will be supervised by Speaker Boris Gryzlov, First Vice Speaker Oleg Morozov and Vice Speakers Svetlana Zhurova, Lyubov Sliska, Vyacheslav Volodin, Yuri Volkov.
The amendments to United Russia’s Charter, whereby the governing bodies of the party will “initiate and coordinate” inter-party’s discussions is expected to strengthen United Russia in the field of ideology.
“Yes, the party is capable of generating the right, the left and central ideas. In the framework of party discussion, we will be elaborating a common platform,” assured Andrei Vorobiev, chief of United Russia's Executive Committee, signalling that through its Charter, the party actually committed itself to replace the whole spectrum of political views that the State Duma lacks.
