Transaero to Save on Import
The government has decided to abolish duties on import of foreign passenger jets with the layout of over 300 seats. Only Transaero will benefit from this decision, the market players speculate, pointing out it intends to import at least ten such jets during a year and will be able to save up to $120 million.
The government’s ruling of December 6 has completely abolished the duties on import of foreign passenger jets with the layout of above 300 seats. Today’s rate is 20 percent. The benefits extend to all Boeing 747s and 777s and Airbus A380s and two of three modifications of A340s and A350s and to Boeing 767-400s. The new rates will take effect in two months after the official promulgation to remain in force till the end of 2008.
In Ilyushin Finance Co., they declined to officially comment on the government’s ruling. The sources say it looks “more than strange,” as the United Aircraft Construction Corp intends to step up production of Il-96-400M, which is in the same category. “The ruling gives no age restrictions for the jets, and Russia will have the aircraft trash in the end,” the sources predict.
Of interest is that only Transaero has contracts for such aircraft deliveries. It is going to import a Boeing 747-400 till this year-end and another seven jets during 2008. Moreover, Transaero is willing to buy at least three Boeing 777s on the market of used aircraft.
