Another Candidate
Boris Nemtsov, the number 2 in the slate of candidates of the Union of Right Forces (SPS), is to be nominated to run for the presidency today, November 23, 2007. Russia’s former prime minister Mikhail Kasyanov voiced his support yesterday, specifying that his personal participation in the race will depend “to significant extent” on ability to put forward a single democratic candidate.
SPS Presidium resolved yesterday to recommend a single candidate for Political Council’s approval at today’s meeting.
“I won’t tell you his name,” said Boris Nadezhdin, member of the SPS Federal Political Council. “We have agreed not to make it public before the meeting. I am the party’s soldier and my opinion doesn’t matter,” Nadezhdin added.
The sources say this candidate is Boris Nemstov. Earlier, SPS had considered the candidacy of Vladimir Ryzhkov, whom the rightist had crossed out of the slate’s first trio under the Kremlin’s pressure. But it seems much more logical to put forward an own candidate, as “it is unclear what Ryzhkov has done for the party,” said the source close to the leadership of SPS.
