Wise Men Ready to Advise Govts on Nuclear Problems
The declaration of the International Conference on Preventing Nuclear Catastrophe that was held in Luxembourg under the auspices of IAEA in May will be released next week. It was inked by over 40 disarmament experts of the world. The document’s masterminds claim they have found a formula to counter growing nuclear challenges and threats.
The declaration, which elaboration took nearly five months, is based on the so-called plan of nuclear wise men. The document that is expected to be a real breakthrough has been submitted to the world leaders and chiefs of key international organizations. Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel received it in person.

To begin with, the document urges all nuclear powers to declare adherence to the Clause 6 of Nonproliferation Treaty that commits them to proceed with disarmament negotiations. In the next move, all nuclear powers should ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. This demand is mostly for the United States and China, which haven’t ratified the document yet.

Predictably, Iran’s nuclear program is one of the highlights of the document. The essence of respective provision is encouraging Tehran to cooperate with the world community by material incentives and punishing it for the lack of will to do it. On the sidelines of the Luxembourg forum, they were mulling over the probability of the U.S. attack on Iran. The danger is still very high, but Moscow may prevent the attack if it persuades Iran to suspend the nuclear effort in Natanz, the masterminds concluded.
