Air Controller's Killer Will Be Released
Swiss federal court rejected a prosecutor's appeal of the reduction of Vitaly Kaloev's sentence from eight years to five years and three months. Kaloev was convicted of the 2005 murder of Skyguide air traffic controller Peter Nielsen, whom he blamed for the death of his family in the crash of a Bashkirian Airlines flight over Lake Constance in 2002. The decision of a Zurich court goes into effect now that will allow Kaloev to go home in the near future, as soon as “necessary administrative procedures” are completed.
The hearing was open to the public and the courtroom was crowded, rarities for the court, and evidence of the resonance the case has with the Swiss public. The five members of the court were divided over the decision. Relatives of Kaloev present at the hearing recalled that Skyguide employees received suspended sentences in the case concerning their responsibility for the tragedy.
Taimuraz Mamsurov, President of North Ossetia, Kaloev's native region, stated that he would meet with Kaloev on his return to Vladikavkaz. He promised that the republic would create comfortable living conditions for Kaloev.
