Russia Won’t Rebuff EU Energy Reforms
Russia is negative about restricting energy reforms elaborated by the EU, but they are not worth crossing swords, Sergei Yastrzhembsky, who is the president’s representative for developing the EU relations, announced after the Portugal’s summit of EU and Russia.
On September 19, the European Commission presented the so-called third package of reforms aimed at liberalizing the energy sector and restricting, amid other things, the chances to buy out the sales business for gas and energy producers. At the same time, the Commission warned that the restrictions would probably further erode relations of Russia and EU in time of implementing the reforms.
But Russia will take no tough actions against the EU as a result of its energy liberalization, although its attitude is negative, Sergei Yastrzhembsky made clear the new standing of the Kremlin on Friday.
Also on Friday, it emerged that Belarus is going to approach Russia’s Prime Minister Nikolay Zubkov, advocating construction of the second stage of Yamal-Europe gas pipeline. The capacity of the new pipeline is estimated to match the capacity of Nord Stream’s first branch of (27.5 billion cu meters). Besides, the EU has promised that the third package of its energy reforms won’t directly affect the Nord Stream project.
