Nadal Crashes Out of Madrid Masters
World number two Rafael Nadal has been crushed by David Nalbandian in the Madrid Masters on Friday. Elsewhere, Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova was forced to retire from a quarter-final against Francesca Schiavone with an injury.
Svetlana Kuznetsova was trailing 6-3 3-3 when she was forced to pull out with a shoulder injury, leaving Italy’s Schiavone to play Tatiana Golovin in semi-finals.

“It’s not that serious, but I need time off,” said Kuznetsova. “I didn’t have much time to recover after last night’s match. The muscle is very tight and I can’t move my arm up. It just got worse and worse as the match went on.”

Elsewhere, world number two Rafael Nadal conceded to David Nalbandian in two sets in the Madrid Masters quarter-finals. The tournament’s second seed lost five service games as his opponent sealed a comfortable 6-1 6-2 win. Nadal struggled with ground stokes while Nalbandian showed play with almost no unforced errors. David Nalbandian will be playing his first semi-final this year after a disappointing season.

Meanwhile, Andy Roddick has become the fifth player to book a place in the season-ending Masters Cup despite pulling out of Madrid with an injury. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Nikolay Davydenko have already qualified for the eight-player showdown in Shanghai.
