Dementieva Won’t Qualify for WTA Championships
Russia’s Elena Dementieva has lost the chance to qualify for the season-ending WTA Championships. Elena pulled out of the Zurich tournament yesterday and won’t have enough scores to advance to the final fight of the best tennis players. Nikolay Davydenko will miss Madrid Masters because of the injury, but will play at the Masters Cup.
To win the race to WTA, Dementieva had to reach at least the final in Zurich, overwhelming Serena Williams in the second round. As if giving a present to Elena, Serena refused to continue the opening round against Patty Schnyder because of the injury.

But Dementieva wasn’t able to benefit from withdrawal of revengeful Williams (whom she beat at the Moscow Kremlin Cup final). Instead, she pulled out of the third set vs. Italian Francesca Schiavone, when the score was 6-4 1-6 2-4.

Dinara Safina yielded to Daniela Hantuchova, who still has the chance to qualify for WTA Championship instead of Maria Sharapova.

2007 Kremlin Cup winner Nikolay Davydenko didn’t show up at the men’s Madrid Masters because of the elbow injury, which had troubled him even in Moscow. But he has booked a place at the Masters Cup already and the withdrawal will entail no grave consequences for his career.
