Prosecutor Protests Islamic Ed. in Chechnya
The prosecutor of Chechnya has protested an August 23, 2007, order by the republic's government to found a state Islamic institute, finding that the use of state money for a religious educational institution is a violation of the Constitution and of Russian legislation on the secular nature of the state. The muftiate of Chechnya called the prosecutor's actions “the recidivism of the communist regime” and gave assurances that a compromise would be found.
The intended institute would be financed by the department of education of the city of Grozny and would teach secular subjects as well as philosophy. There was no comment available from the Grozny mayor's office. Head of the legal department of the Chechen presidential administration Gaib Basnukaev confirmed that the protest had been received. He said that it was “under consideration” at present. He added that no money had been spent on the institute yet.

A spokesman for the muftiate of Chechnya had strong words for the prosecutor's actions. He added that Wahhabis started the war in Chechnya, who “led Chechen youth away from the path and insulted Islam,” so “a correct religious education should be a matter of importance to the state.”
