Kyrgyz President Forms New Party
President of Kyrgyzstan Kurmanbek Bakiev has founded and taken the lead of a new political party, Ak Zhol (The Bright Path), which has united the main pro-presidential forces. This is the latest step in the formation of a new system of governance in the country, in which state power will be more concentrated. Noting that there are over 100 parties in the country today, the Kyrgyz president noted at the Ak Zhol founding congress that “No one is taking responsibility and, in the best case, they are only criticizing the authorities. There was no party that would do any work until today. That is why I decided to create a new political force, a party of creation, a party of responsibility, a party of action.”
Although Bakiev has been president of Kyrgyzstan for over two years, he only gained decisive power in April of this year, when he convinced opposition leader Almazbek Atambaev to become prime minister, this causing a schism in the opposition. In the autumn, Bakiev dissolved the parliament, which had occasionally opposed him, and the country's constitutional court rejected the last two editions of the Constitution passed by the parliament. He made amendments to the Constitution to return to himself the powers the parliament had taken away and held a referendum on the amendments and on a reform of the parliament. There is no doubt that the president's party will hold the majority in the parliament. The opposition has announced that it is in talks on unification.
