Antimonopoly Service Steps In to Contain Inflation
Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) will propose to PM Viktor Zubkov to shorten from a month to zero the time, during which the government’s rulings on changes in export/import duties will take effect. According to FAS, the chance to change a tariff rate during a day will enable to timely respond to inflation surges.
During the government’s meeting slated for October 15, Russia’s Federal Antimonopoly Service will voice to Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov its methods to contain inflation, said Andrei Tsarikovski, who is the deputy chief at FAS. In this respect, the proposal of greatest significance is to shorten from a month to zero the term, during which the government’s rulings on changes in export/import duties will come into force. A new duty is to take effect on the date of signing the respective ruling, FAS insists.
”When we see the avalanche growth in imports, we are to respond in no time, and this legislative initiative will help us do it. These rulings should take effect immediately, on the day of signing rather than in a month as it is now,” Tsarikovski said.
In addition to economic methods, FAS has elaborated some administrative actions aimed at containing inflation. By this year-end, FAS deputy head Anatoli Golomolzin said, the government will have amendments to the Criminal Code that FAS worked out in tandem with Interior Ministry and that set forth penal responsibility for the cartel collusion.
