Russians Grow by Uzbeks, Ukrainians
The trend for the registered growth in migration that emerged in 2004 has deepened this year. According to Demoskop Weekly Bulletin, the indicator stepped up 1.8 fold from January to July of 2007 vs. a year earlier; 165,700 arrived in Russia for permanent residence, while only 26,200 left the country.
As before, the overwhelming majority of all incomers are natives of CIS – roughly 96 percent this year. Of interest is that the number of Uzbek natives has grown materially – up to 32,800 this year vs. 21,400 a year earlier. Besides, more and more people are leaving Ukraine for Russia - 29,200 from January to July of 2007 vs. 19,300 in respective period of 2006.
Kazakhstan and Armenia follow with 17,000, while the migration exchange with Azerbaijan ensured the growth of 8,600. The contribution of Tadjikistan in growth of Russia’s population has also become more notable. A bit less than 10,000 arrived here in the first seven months of this year vs. less than 3,400 a year earlier.
